The Northern Territory Government's Remote Water Team (RWT) supported community engagement by working with NT Health's Senior Aboriginal Health Promotion Officer and remote communities to co-design water educational materials, including factsheets and an animation. These resources aim to improve understanding of drinking water sources, safety, and management in ways that are clear, easy to understand, and culturally appropriate.
Community members helped shape the materials to reflect local terms, knowledge, and preferred ways of communicating. Technical information was shared alongside community input, ensuring both the content and format made sense to local audiences. The focus was on simple language, clear messages, and visual storytelling to explain complex water concepts.
The materials have improved community awareness of drinking water systems, risks, and how they are managed. They have also helped build openness and trust between government and communities. This work shows how co-designed, culturally informed communication tools can strengthen engagement and support more informed participation.
