Abbey Potter

Dr Abbey Potter began her career as a small animal veterinarian, before returning to Murdoch University to undertake a PhD in biosecurity and later lecture within the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences program. Her doctoral research was grounded in a One Health framework, investigating the role of kangaroos as vertebrate hosts for zoonotic pathogens, including the mosquito-borne Ross River virus. This work led to a career spanning more than a decade at the Western Australia (WA) Department of Health, where she has been a key member of the Medical Entomology team. During this time, she has contributed to major public health initiatives, including leading the Japanese encephalitis virus surveillance response and the state-wide rollout of the Fight the Bite communication campaign. Abbey is passionate about education, health promotion, and delivering practical, community-focused strategies for primary prevention of mosquito-borne diseases.
